Why do I need a Home Intercom?

• A Home Intercom was a very popular thing to have in the past, why? Mostly for communication! You can easily get in touch with others in your home by simply broadcasting a message or messaging the room where you through there were.  Today, communication is still very important for something as simple as dinner to messaging an emergency. Broadcasting a message during a fire means lives are saved as you usually only have less than a minute in a major fire to get everyone safe.

Why doesn’t my home have an Intercom now?

• Most home builders have focused on the aesthetics; counter tops, flooring, cabinets, architecture and abandoned the Intercom.

I have an old Home Intercom that doesn’t work, what are my options?

• You can take it out and have someone add sheetrock, then paint, very expensive to do
• You can try to fix the old intercom, but most parts aren’t available. If you do find parts they don’t always work because there might be an issue with wiring or the main unit. The original manufacturers don’t make intercoms anymore so you can’t buy parts through them.

Why did Home Intercoms lose their popularity?

• There are a lot of ideas of why this happened. Most people liked broadcasting music, however as technology improved so did stereo systems. Intecom systems were never made to sound amazing at high volumes, it was made for the background. For the time it was a novelty to have music playing constantly in a home but that faded with time.
• The old systems had tubes which had to be replaced, so there was maintenance after a few years of use. Then the tubes because hard to find as technology transitioned to electronics. Most musicians would argue that tube technology is much better, the sound seems to be richer. But customers grew tired of having to get tubes replaced.
• As technology improved there were Home Intercoms that embraced it! You could get a an 8 Track, Cassette or CD Player. However, again these would break eventually and be expensive to fix or replace.
• For communication people started using Cellphones and texting. Very easy now to just text someone in the other room. Broadcasting a message is still considered the best way to communicate when there is an emergency which you could only do by calling someone on their cell phone in your own home.

Can I get a new Home Intercom System built into the home I’m building?
